The story of Nellie the Sewing Machine Girl.

Bertha Sloan loses her job as a sewing-machine girl and subsequently is employed as telephone girl with a lingerie manufacturing company. She soon falls in love with the assistant shipping clerk, Roy Davis, and is promoted to chief model for the firm, owing to the patronage of Morton, the wealthy and wicked manager. Bertha is about to take a position in Paris as designer when Morton lures her to his home.

East Germany, in autumn 1999. Gudrun Pfaff is about to turn sixty when she finds out that the orphanage she grew up in is being sold to turn into a hotel, and she is willing to do anything to stop it.

One night, Nellie the Elephant hears the head of the herd calling to her from far, far away. Tired of performing in the circus and longing for home, Nellie packs her trunk and begins her journey home. Each episode chronicles the adventures of Nellie as she takes trains, planes, ships, and rockets to get back to her family in the jungle. Nellie meets endearing characters along the way.
